Worship & Faith

The Heart of Canada

There are over 300 churches, a dozen synagogues, 22 mosques, 5 Buddhist temples and scores of church or religious facilities including Hutterite churches on each colony.

However, 37% of the population declared no religious affiliation in the 2021 Census. (https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/as-sa/fogs-spg/page.cfm?lang=E&topic=10&dguid=2021A000246).

While religion is not a central focus of the annual Folklorama festival, that features over 40 ethnic communities from the province, many of those pavilions provide information on the religious makeup of the countries from which they originate. (https://folklorama.ca/)

The only statutory religious holidays in the province centre around the Christian faith (Christmas, Easter), but many businesses encourage their employees to celebrate the significant religious events of their faith.

Many religious groups in the province operate private, faith-based schools, with partial funding from the province and a relatively standardized education curriculum for middle- and high schools.
