Clandeboye: The Lovely Woods of South Interlake

The Heart of Canada: Connecting North, East and West

Ice cream stand, grocery store, gas bar, community club and ice rink. Yes, Clandeboye is a small hamlet of less than 1,000 people on Highway 9, 11 km north of Selkirk, but it’s a peaceful atmosphere and every neighbour looks out for every other neighbour. There’s not a lot to see if you are interested in just things, but it’s a perfect place to visit if you want to meet great people. You encounter more than people here though. You encounter quiet nature. As Robert Frost wrote, you can “stop by the woods” on any evening and enjoy tranquility. Yet, it’s also very affordable, with modest size and modest price for homes!

Clandeboye forms part of the Rural Municiaplity of St Clements, along with Petersfield, to the north on Highway 9. Each community holds only a few hundred people. The surrounding agricultural community adds a couple of thousand more. Like twin towns, each community boasts a small store, while Petersfield lays claim to a motor hotel and a greenhouse.

A few miles to the east, fishermen enjoy Breezy Point, a popular fishing spot on the Red River. Selkirk is about 12 kilometers south.

One of the unique features of Clandeboye is the acreage of planted trees, artificial creek, hills and meadow that one resident spent over a decade building. As you enter the village from the south, you will be struck by these “lovely woods of Clandeboye.”
