Lockport: Home of Historic River Locks, White Pelicans & Great Catfish Fishing

Lockport in the early 1900s was the point at which boats carrying cargo north were shunted from the Winnipeg side of the Red River to the Lake Winnipeg side on their journeys north. The historic river locks and phenomenal catfish fishing make it a popular day trip destination. Today, locals know Lockport as a great fishing spot. Fishermen compete with white pelicans for the catch of the day. Of course, Skinners is an historic icon in the area, serving giant hot dogs to day-trippers for decades. It competes with the Half Moon Drive-In, a throwback to the 1950s and 60s, just a kilometer away.

Driving over the narrow bridge on Hwy 44. you can look down on the old river locks and channel, which are still maintained but not in use. Day trippers fish for catfish at the mouth of teh river locks.

A large condominium complex overlooks the river locks and the Red River, while Gaffers Restaurant provides a unique dining experience. Several other eateries, including Ricky’s, A & W a pizza outlet and a small restaurant in the nearby hotel offer dining choices.

Shop at the Lockport store, with alcohol, groceries, fishing supplies, some hardware, food and more.

Just a few hundred meters east, the Winnipeg Floodway keeps the community safe from spring flooding.

Set well set back from highway 44, the residential area offers quiet living. With Selkirk so close, hospitals and good shopping are mere minutes away.

Points of Interest, Things to Do: There’s Skinners or Half Moon Drive Ins, both with incredible 1960s style hot dog, burger & shakes menus. Next, the Lockport locks. Year round, fishermen enjoy fishing on the Red. Red River Floodway, nearby, and considered a modern engineering marvel, only fills when the Red overflows.Don’t forget the summer farmers market.
