The only F-5 tornado to ever be recorded in Canada passed right through the heart of Elie, and not a person was killed or seriously injured, out of its 620 residents.
In 1890, Elie was casually called Du Tank, because of its huge watertank serving the railway trains of the era. It evolved into a grain transportation hub, with a huge 130,000 bushel grain elevator.
