Blumenort: A Small Town Exploding in Popularity

The Heart of Canada: Connecting North, East and West

Blumenort is just one of many southeast Manitoba small towns that are exploding in popularity, for many reasons, including being an ideal small town for families. Just a couple of decades ago, Blumenort consisted of little more than a few houses set back from Highway 12 south of Highway 1, a lumber store and a meat processing facility. Today, it has seen an explosion of residences, a great school, park, stores and more. It still retains the flavour of its religious, Mennonite roots (due primarily to nearby Steinbach, a city with extremely strong religious background), but it has also become a wonderful bedroom community servicing Steinbach (5 km) and Winnipeg (40 km). In 2001, it had a population of 875. In 2021, it had grown to almost 1,800 people.

Housing is more affordable in Blumenort, with prices generally about 15% lower than in Winnipeg. It also is an extremely safe community, making it the ideal small town for families.

Blumenort’s best known business in Manitoba is Country Meats, a family-owned operation. Of course, if you are from Manitoba, you must try their farmers sausage, a real Mennonite treat. It is one of scores of incredibly well-prepared meat products, along with Manitoba’s iconic go-to dinner, perogies. The Mennonite tradition of high quality along with hard work results in consistently great food from Country Meats.

But Blumenort is more than solid, quality businesses. Even though it still is a small town, it looks forward, planning well. Its network of walking paths, its recreation facilities and its focus on family leisure spaces make it enticing.
