Fishing, Hunting & Nature

The Heart of Canada

With 100,000 lakes, Manitoba is bound to be a fisherman’s paradise. Even lakes and rivers near larger cities and towns have a bounty of fish. The Red River in Selkirk is known as the Catfish Capital of North America. A small river, the Roseau River in the southeast corner of the province, saw a 15-foot sturgeon caught. Northern Pike (jackfish) can be caught in almost every stream and many smaller backwaters and ponds. We are known for our walleye (pickerel), but Goldeye is almost exclusive to Lake Winnipeg. Learn more about the province’s fish resources at the government Recreational Fishing page (https://www.gov.mb.ca/nrnd/fish-wildlife/fish/recreational_fishing/index.html )

bookkeeping

Bear, moose, elk and deer hunting seasons all provide opportunity for bow hunting, muzzle loader or regular rifle hunting. Waterfowl season usually is in the fall, while there are some years when certain waterfowl species can be hunted by licence in the spring. Some game hunting licences are only open by a drawing of names. More information is available on the Manitoba government website (https://www.gov.mb.ca/nrnd/fish-wildlife/wildlife/index.html or https://www.gov.mb.ca/nrnd/fish-wildlife/pubs/fish_wildlife/huntingguide.pdf)
