Ile des Chenes

The Heart of Canada: Connecting North, East and West

Just 15 kilometers from Winnipeg on Hwy 59, Ile des Chenes is a town that has grown significantly in the past two decades, to approximately 2,000 people. With new developments planned, the population will grow to 4,000 within 3-5 years. Many people live here and commute to Steinbach or Winnipeg, while many others have chosen to retire in the community. There are many condominiums and apartments to choose from. With excellent highway access to its two largest neighbours, the town is perfectly situated for this growth, along with its neighbour, Niverville. It also is an extremy quiet and safe community with a divided highway to the city.

While the number of businesses is relatively small, this offers an advantage for the quiet, safe lifestyle. Within 20km, Winnipeg offers abundant shopping, as does Steinbach. The few larger businesses locate on the west side of town, away from residences. A few personal services businesses and a small grocery stand along the main street.

Ile des Chenes provides an abundance of easy recreation options, with a large arena & community centre, outdoor baseball and soccer areas and adequate walking & hiking areas.

South of the town, a campground provides Winnipegers with a site close to the city. Nearby, there is a golf course.

While the town, in the RM of Ritchot, has French origins, most of the residents are not. The outmigration from Winnipeg has altered the historicsl ethnic makeup, but Ile des Chenes still celebrates its roots. That is not a play on words for the French community whose meaning translates to “Island of the Oaks.” Neither is the “island” reference, since the community has often seen spring floods of the Red River innundate the farmland around while the town remains an island.
