Boissevain: Tommy the Turtle Welcomes You to Boissevain

Boissevain is a town of 2,300 located south of Brandon on Hwy 10 and 443 (just north of Highway 3). Located near the Turtle Mountains (Manitoba-sized mountains, not B.C. Rocky Mountains), it is best known for its summer Turtle Derby and the talking Tommy the Turtle statue. Boissevain’s Tommy the Turtle is a feature for young and old.

While Tommy the Turtle welcomes you to Boissevain, the International Peace Gardens, normally a hot spot for tourists, is less busy and welcoming in today’s political environment. Just south of Boissevain, the Peace gardens are a jointly maintained project by Canada and the USA.

One family, a few years ago, saw the nearby hamlet of Ninga and Tommy the Turtle as somehow connected to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Not true, of course, but a great prompt to draw people in!

While Tommy and the Peace Gardens draw lots of visitors, Boissevain also holds the annual summer Turtle Derby, has four museums and a large outdoor art gallery. It also has a great aquatic centre. Several restaurants, including two or three ethnic diners, offer visitors and residents a pleasant dining experience.

While not boasting a lot of affordabl housing like apartments and condominius, Boissevain has great free-standing homes available.
