Camp Morton is a tiny, but mighty visitor experience on Lake Winnipeg . It offers both a window onto the past and a contemporary camping experience. Rustic campground but modern rented cabins and exotic yurts combine with historic buildings in a very small footprint.
Visitors know Camp Morton as the tiny little provincial park along the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. It offers unique attractions and one-of-a-kind visual experiences, too. It’s outsized but intriquing features include a mere 19 campsites, along with yurts and cabins to rent. A former boys’ campground, it is split into multiple pieces.
Just 8 km north of Gimli on Hwy 222, the south portion is the campground, snuggled against the edge, rather than the shore of the lake. While there are scores of sandy beaches from Matlock to Hnausa (and farther north) on this sie of Lake Winnipeg, Camp Morton’s shore is more of a drop off, with larger rocks not far from shore.
What is most compelling in this complex, though, is the north portion, where a unique log house (actually, more than one building) shows the creative Icelandic design. It uses firewood-length pieces, embeded in mortar, rather than long logs to create the building. While this building style was popular in the late 1800s, there are only one or two privately-ownd buildings still in existence in teh area.
Also within the north part, there is a grotto, right along the shore of the lake.
There are few amenities in the park, but the natural appeal and uniqueness of the site make it worth visiting.
