Pinawa

The Heart of Canada

Pinawa (population 1,350) has a multi-layered history. Originally constructed in 1901 as a hydro-electric dam to power the city of Winnipeg, it later became the hub for Atomic Energy of Canada research facilities. Both closed, but a group of several nearby communities has revived the nuclear energy component to research and build small nuclear reactors. The dam was converted to a provincial park. In the 1990s, the community rebranded itself as a great place to work remotely, with excellent internet access and great support infrastructure. Next in its history, it promotes itself as a retirement ara, while also boasting a great tubing experience.
