Even with a population of under 250 people, Anola, located on Highway 115 about 25 kilometers east of Winnipeg, still has a couple of restaurants, two service stations, a hotel & bar and a small grocery. It is surrounded by primary bush land and grain fields. Although it is quite close to Winnipeg, it has not experienced the rush of outmigration to bedroom communities that nearby places like Steinbach, Lorette , Oak Bank and even Dugald have seen, making it an ideal, pastoral place to live. Still. there are new housing developments emerging in this very affordable community. However, its feature draw is the 10 Acre Woods, an animal rescue centre and petting farm.

The Anola and District Museum, like many small Manitoba towns, is a fascinating replica pioneer village with many of the original buildings and artifacts. The Selo Ukrinian Dancer are well-known in the province and, even though the community has only about 200 residents, has a 100-strong troupe.
Beyond 10 Acres: Unusual Naming History
Elma, Hazel, Vivian and Anola all were names of local stops on local rail lines. Anola originally was named Free Port, a very unimaginative name. Some speculate that Anola got its name from the slight rise on which the town developed, but the more appealing story is that it was the name of the wife of a local railway official. This seems more consistent with regional practices, since the other three towns are just down the road (or rail line). Just north of the region, there are seven lakes named after women. Indeed, among these bodies of water is Seven Sisters Falls. A penchant, it seems, for paying tribute to the women of the era.
While the !0 Acre Woods tugs at visitors’ heartstrings, the romantic history of names in the area endures.
